Last Hurdle for Oral

PRACTICE ONE

“Let’s go for some grocery shopping!” my mother exclaimed as she took her floral-print recycling bag and coerced me into following her.

My mother loves to shop. She can shop from day to night, anywhere and anytime. Upon knowing that there’s a sale somewhere in town, she will definitely rush there. She is only short of being labelled a “shopaholic”.

Fortunately, I have inherited none of her “shopping” genes. However, being the only child in this family, it is inevitable that I am always the one being dragged along on her shopping sprees most of the time. 

Conversation: Do you like to shop? Why and why not?
                    : Where do you usually shop?
               
Possible Good Vocabulary:

PRACTICE TWO

“Ohh… It’s my turn to mop the floor today…” lamented Ken as he started packing his schoolbag. Ken dreads doing household chores. He often envies his classmates who have maids to help out with the household chores.

Since young, Ken’s mother believes in inculcating independence in her children. Hence, she would rather have Ken and his siblings doing the household chores than to hire a maid.

No matter how much Ken detests doing these household chores, he dares not go against his mother’s wishes for he knows that it is for his own good.

 

Conversation: Do you like doing household chores?
                    : Is it important for children to do household chores from young?

Possible Good Vocabulary:

PRACTICE THREE

“Wow, the Botanic Gardens has changed so much!” exclaimed Grandmother as she ambled around the garden excitedly with her walking stick.

The sun was unbelievably hot but that did not dissuade Grandmother from going to the park that day. It is rare for the whole family to go on excursions given our hectic schedules.

However, upon seeing the radiant smile on Grandmother’s face, I believe that putting aside some time to bond with Grandmother is more important than any other things in this world.

 

Conversation: How do you spend time with your family?
                    : Do you like going to the park?

“Hey, Ahmad! Going to school?” Uncle Tan asked as he sat at the void deck of the block, enjoying the cool breeze.

Uncle Tan is a familiar sight in the neighbourhood. Without fail, he would be seated at the stone table at 8a.m as he watched the day pass by.

Ahmad would greet Uncle Tan every morning when he was on his way to school. He has immense respect for this octogenarian who had spent his days serving the nation as an upright and noble police officer. 

   

CONVERSATION: Tell us about your neighbourhood

What do you like about your neighbourhood?

Possible Good Vocabulary:

Pound Dog Cry!

Today is the death day of nobody's dog
Nothing will mark it but a note in the log
I'm faceless and nameless and no tears will fall
For I know in your world I have no worth at all
To you, my sweet someone, I'm a friend and a dear
We ran the wind daily and you held me so near
But the gate was left open - I chanced a walk on my own
I'd have cowered in fear if only I'd known
I know how you cried on the night that I strayed
I know how you searched, I know how you prayed
But I went to a pound far far from our home
Where I crouched in despair in my kennel alone
I know that you phoned for I heard your dear voice
And I hoped you would hear me so I barked myself hoarse
Although I'm a Lab cross with stockings all white
On their form I'm a Staff cross - the description's not right
So they said I'm not here and I sank to my bed
My kennel cough's worse and I can't raise my head
The rescue came yesterday but they hadn't a place
For an un-neutered cross breed with his mucus-streaked face
If only you'd come to search for me here
You would have known me at once, you would have sensed I was near
You would have sorted my ills, you would have carried me home
And I promise our God no more would I roam
Now my eyes plead for mercy for my seven days are done
And I am waiting with dread for the final vet run
No arms will caress me as they inject me to death
No words will comfort me as I take my last breath
When the body man comes, it is fitting I'm found
In a bin bag in the freezer in the depths of the pound
Thrown away like the rubbish - no respect and no shame
Denied even the time to find you again
My loyalty and devotion they did cruelly betray
Without microchip or nametag, I am just a dispensable stray
Once waggy-tailed, once proud, beloved and free
Oh Dad look with pain at what mankind's done to me!

Picture Discussion

This picture depicts a scene at the void deck of a Housing Development Board flat. The place seems to be deserted. I believe that it is during working hours and most people are at work or in school. The façade of the flat is quite ordinary-looking and not aesthetically-pleasing. I think that this could be an old estate as newer estates have glass facades with roof gardens. However, the estate is rather clean and well-maintained. Personally I feel that the cleaners and the residents have done a good job and we should learn from them.

On the second level of the flat, a man clad in white shirt with curly hair is smiling from ear to ear, showing his pearly white teeth. His hands are stretched out in front of him and he nonchalantly dropped a pot of flowers onto the ground. I think he is very inconsiderate as he can probably hurt someone. In my opinion, he does not look very sane to me or he probably finds a lot of joy in scaring others. This is dangerous and I think his family members should keep a close eye on him.

There is a father and son at the void deck. The father is casually dressed in shirt and pants while the son is dressed in a crew-neck t-shirt and shorts. I think they are residents in the estate and they just happen to walk past. The father looks stupefied and the little boy cowers behind his father in fear. I think they are shocked by the flower pot being smashed into smithereens in front of them. If I were them, I would also be appalled as the flower pot just dropped centimetres away from me. I think the father should turn and give the man a good look so as to visually capture his salient features. That will aid in police investigations later.

A stone’s throw away, there are two immaculately dressed policemen on patrol. One of them pointed at the man who threw the flower pot and ordered him sternly to stop what he was doing. His colleague seems unaware of what he is doing. On his face is a look of bewilderment and confusion. I think they probably witnessed the whole incident and they caught the perpetrator red-handed. I feel that the police should be more vigilant and step up on the security in the area. I hope that the perpetrator will be apprehended on the spot and put away in jail.

In conclusion, killer litter can be a serious offence and can often be fatal. As innocent people are involved, I hope that there will be less killer litter by spreading the awareness of the severity of killer litter. After all, we should not harm others and should be considerate when living together in a community.

GRAPHIC STIMULUS
- Scrutinize the graphic... explore all options available.
- Think through before writing down the answers.
- Some answers can be quite close. You really have to READ carefully.


GRAMMAR MCQ

- He saw Yvonne steal the money yesterday. (After a verb in past tense, the next verb should be in present tense.)

- Use of articles: Listen to the sounds. Words that sound like "YOU", silent "h" in "hour", "w" in "one" etc should not be used with "an". He went to A unique restaurant for lunch .

- Use of "If" (conditionals): For events that's unlikely to happen, use "If I WERE the king of the world, I would not have examinations!" For events that's like to happen, use "If I AM well enough, I will go to the party."

- British verbs: travel --> travelling  tranquil --> tranquilling  compel --> compelling


PUNCTUATION MCQs

- Exclamation marks --> used when words like "exclaimed", "roared", "shouted" etc.
- I wonder what I had done to offend you.
- Tom asked, "Why are you here?"
- "You should be here," he reasoned, "the students were waiting for you."
- "You should be here," he reasoned. "The students were waiting for you."

VOCABULARY MCQs
- study all commonly misspelled words
- look for clues in sentences. (highlight them!)

VOCABULARY CLOZE

- read the ENTIRE passage first... look for contextual clues. (Highlight clues!)
- A word may have 2 or more meanings. Therefore contextual clues are important.

COMPREHENSION MCQs
- one higher order question
- read carefully. Highlight tenses!

GRAMMAR CLOZE
- read once first
- insert possible answers
- READ again after inserting the answers. Check that structurally it sounds right.
- Look for clues like whether the answer should be in PAST TENSE OR PRESENT TENSE / PLURAL OR SINGULAR

EDITING

- Determine tense of passage
- Check whether it is plural or singular
- for spelling, check the phonetics


COMPRE CLOZE
- Determine tense of the passage
- Read ONCE or TWICE beforehand
- Highlight clues
- Use pencil to fill in the blanks
- Read again to check if it sounds right
- Write answers in pen

SYNTHESIS
- Do not miss out words / letters when transforming. E.g. examinations vs examination
- Must have full stops.
- Relative pronouns: Who, whose, which, whom, where etc... either 2 COMMAS or NO COMMAS
- Do not change the tense of the question unless it's meant for reported speech. Identify reported speech through inverted commas

COMPRE OE
- look for clues in the passage
- determine tense of passage. Information text should be in present tense.
-highlight tense of questions
- Mixture of tense: Do you think the author had made the right choice? I think the author DID not make the right choice...
- Remember your FULL STOPS
- Remember your closed inverted commas when answering questions like "Which phrase/ sentence/ word etc..."
-For yes/no questions: Answer as "No, I do not think so "... not "No."
-Do not make spelling errors for words that appear in the passage.
